Alexander Nevsky Cathedral - Sofia, Bulgaria

Bulgaria is an enigmatic country located in the south of Europe mostly untouched by tourism and often overlooked in favor of Greece or Croatia, however over the last 10 years this country is fast becoming a much talked about travel destination. The country is officially called the Republic of Bulgaria and borders with Romania, Serbia, Republic of Macedonia, Greece, Turkey and the Black Sea, a big draw card for holiday makers wanting to soak up the sun on long sandy beaches. Bulgaria is not only associated with its golden beaches framing the Bulgarian Riviera but for its breathtaking countryside and mountain ranges which cover 60% of the country. The views are enchanting over boundless vineyards and orchards encouraging a sense of relaxation and pleasure. The famous central Stara Planina or the breathtaking Raysko Praskalo waterfall will please those looking for natural beauty. The forests around the Rila and Pirin Mountains are inhibited by wildlife that is scarce elsewhere in Europe, like bears, lynx and rare birds. With a turbulent history following the decline of the Bulgarian Empire, Ottoman Rule and subsequent decades behind the Iron Curtain of Communism there remains many relics to be admired. One such ruin is the city of Plovdiv,    the oldest city of the world with the sixth oldest settlement, that gained its fame thanks to its ancient Roman architecture. Another not to be missed is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery located in the southwestern Rila Mountains called the Rila Monastery, established in the 10th century it is currently regarded by Bulgarians as the most important monument of the country. Another of Bulgaria’s attractions is its diverse cuisine, consisting mostly of fresh vegetables, fruits and meat, especially pork. While visiting this country, all should try the typical shopska salad, traditional Bulgarian cake banica which can be filled with everything, from special sheep cheese, sorrel or sweet nuts to dried fruits. While dining in Bulgaria one must try the famous Rakija, a delicious vodka made of fermented plums, grapes, apricots, peaches or even quince. Bulgaria is also famous for its traditional music and many outstanding local festivals which make any visit to Bulgaria entertaining and pleasurable.
