While visiting New York City in the United States of America, it would be an irrevocable loss to forget to spend at least a short time in the heart and soul of Manhattan, Central Park, covering an area of 843 acres of prime real estate in the centre of the city. It is one of the most recognizable symbols of the city and it gives not only the inhabitants but all who visit not only an oasis from the bustling city, but a chance to enjoy a simple stroll, a moment of relaxation or the opportunity to enjoy the quiet open space away from the noise of the city.
The idea of establishing a public park appeared in 1853, and work was quickly carried out. At that time, the government of the city wanted to develop an area between the city and the small village of Harlem, which due to the layout of the land was undesirable for private development, however was inhabited by 1600 poor residents living in shanties on the site. In 1857, a design competition was won by Frederic Law Olmsted and Calvert Vauks called The Greensward Plan. It took almost 15 years to transform the irregular terrain, barren soil and swampy ground into a beautiful English inspired park, and so created the first landscaped public park in the United States, comparable to the admired public parks of Paris and London. After a period of deterioration, poor management, crime and vandalism the park was regenerated and nowadays, the greatest asset of the park is the buffer of trees which create this magical retreat from the buzz of the city. The park beckons visitors with extensive walking tracks, man-made lakes and ponds providing a haven for wildlife, birdwatchers and boating enthusiasts, In winter, a white wonderland of ice skating and cross country skiing. For children you will find a zoo, carousel and 21 playgrounds. To see all the park has to offer it is recommended to take a tour around the park by bike.
